Finding a Quality Nursing Home
When it’s time to begin touring nursing homes, it’s vital to check out the facility for a high level of care to help avoid the dangers of abuse or neglect. The next time you tour a facility:
Check the Cleanliness.
Watch out for any unkempt or unattended areas of the facility. Are windows and corners well maintained or neglected? Inquire about the maintenance schedule and find out what help a resident can expect. Ask about laundry service.
Take note of any foul smells and ask questions about the source. You want to be sure the facility is properly and routinely cleaned, and that any unexpected mess is promptly handled.
Check attitudes of staff and volunteers.
All those who interact with residents as staff or volunteers should conduct themselves with professionalism and courtesy. Make sure they give appropriate eye contact and listen to residents. Ask the staff questions about their job and goals, meet with management, and consider whether you see the staff as competent and reliable.
Check the Meal Service.
Sit down and dine like a resident. Learn the dining hours, options and procedures for each meal. Ask what happens when an individual is unable to make it to the dining room for a meal, and chat with some current residents.
Check the Personal Care.
Obtain as much information as you can about bathing and grooming options. Find out if residents receive help, and observe if they appear clean and appropriately dressed with their hair and nails regularly attended to.
These are only four aspects to consider while touring a nursing home facility, but they can provide valuable clues about the quality of care. If you believe your loved one is facing nursing home abuse or neglect, call Allen and Parker attorneys today!
